Description
It knows you’re in the room, even when you sit still.
The HLK-LD2410C-P is a 24 GHz millimetre-wave radar that detects people who are moving and people who are not. It fixes the biggest weakness of ordinary PIR sensors, which switch the lights off while you are reading or working at your desk. The pins are already soldered, so you can plug it in and start.
Why radar beats a PIR sensor
A PIR sensor only sees movement. Radar also picks up the tiny movements of a person who is sitting or resting. Choose a situation to compare.
Both sensors see a walking person.
Radar picks up small body movements, so the lights stay on while you work or read.
Radar can sense the tiny movement of a resting person.
An empty room correctly reads as empty.
Radar waves pass through plastic, so you can hide the sensor inside a neat enclosure.
General behaviour of PIR and 24 GHz radar sensors. Results depend on placement, range and settings.

What you can build
Anywhere you need to know if someone is really there.
Smart lights that never switch off on you
Turn lights on when someone enters and off only when the room is truly empty, even when people sit still.
Fan and AC saver
Stop running appliances in empty rooms and cut your electricity bill.
ESP32 smart home sensor
Send presence to Home Assistant or ESPHome.
Office and desk occupancy
Show which rooms and desks are free.
Classroom automation
Switch the fan and lights off when everyone has left.
Hidden sensor builds
Mount it inside a plastic case or behind a panel for a clean look.
Wiring it to your board
| Sensor pin | ESP32 |
|---|---|
| VCC | 5V (VIN) |
| GND | GND |
| OUT | GPIO 27 |
| TX | GPIO 16 (RX2) |
| RX | GPIO 17 (TX2) |
Good to know: the sensor needs a 5V supply, but its signals are 3.3V. That suits ESP32 boards perfectly. On a 5V Arduino UNO, the OUT pin works fine, but use a resistor divider or level shifter on the line going into the sensor’s RX pin. The serial link runs at 256000 baud, so use a hardware serial port, not SoftwareSerial.
Basic code: simple presence with the OUT pin
This works on any Arduino or ESP32 board. Connect OUT to pin 2 (use pin 27 on ESP32, as in the table).
const int outPin = 2;
void setup() {
pinMode(outPin, INPUT);
Serial.begin(115200);
}
void loop() {
if (digitalRead(outPin) == HIGH) {
Serial.println("Person detected");
} else {
Serial.println("Room empty");
}
delay(500);
}Basic code: distance and signal on ESP32
Install the “ld2410” library by ncmreynolds in the Arduino IDE Library Manager. This sketch prints whether the target is moving or still, and how far away it is.
#include <ld2410.h>
ld2410 radar;
void setup() {
Serial.begin(115200);
Serial2.begin(256000, SERIAL_8N1, 16, 17); // RX2 = 16, TX2 = 17
radar.begin(Serial2);
}
void loop() {
radar.read();
if (radar.presenceDetected()) {
if (radar.movingTargetDetected()) {
Serial.print("Moving, distance (cm): ");
Serial.println(radar.movingTargetDistance());
}
if (radar.stationaryTargetDetected()) {
Serial.print("Still, distance (cm): ");
Serial.println(radar.stationaryTargetDistance());
}
} else {
Serial.println("Room empty");
}
delay(500);
}Questions buyers ask
How is it different from a PIR sensor?
A PIR sensor reacts to moving heat, so it often misses people who sit still. This radar senses tiny movements too, so it keeps detecting someone who is reading, working or resting.
Does it work with Arduino and ESP32?
Yes. Use the OUT pin for a simple on/off signal on any board, or the UART pins for distance data. ESP32 is the easiest match because its pins are 3.3V.
Can I use it with an Arduino UNO?
Yes, with the OUT pin. For the UART data, add a level shifter or resistor divider on the UNO’s TX line to the sensor, and use a hardware serial port, because the default speed of 256000 baud is too fast for SoftwareSerial.
Can I change the range and sensitivity?
Yes. The module accepts commands over UART, so you can set the detection distance, sensitivity and hold time for your room. Many LD2410C modules can also be configured through the maker’s phone app over Bluetooth.
Can it see through walls?
It passes through thin non-metal covers such as plastic and glass. It is not made to see through thick or metal walls, so use one sensor per room.
Do the pins come soldered?
Yes. This version has 2.54 mm pins already soldered, so it plugs straight into a breadboard or jumper wires.
Do you deliver outside Dhaka?
Yes, we deliver all over Bangladesh.
